COG sponsors scholarship for future geriatricians

By John M. Weigand, M.D.

Director of Geriatric Services, Central Ohio Geriatrics

There is estimated to be a shortage of geriatricians in the United States of more than 23,000. With the loss of retiring physicians over the coming decade, this shortage is estimated to climb substantially. We have decided to commit funding annually to send either a primary care resident (Internal Medicine or Family Medicine) or a fellow in Geriatric Medicine to the annual meeting of the American Medical Directors Association. The scholarship includes room, board, airfare and registration to the AMDA Futures Program. In the past month, we have agreed to co-sponsor an additional geriatrics fellow who will be joining Central Ohio Geriatrics in September, Amit Bhojraj, M.D. We have invested more than $3,500 this year in support of these scholarships.

An excerpt about our scholarship from the AMDA Foundation Newsletter: When industry purse strings tightened and funding for the AMDA Foundation Futures program moved to a grassroots approach, state chapters and other stepped up to the plate. So far this year, state chapters, including the Ohio Medical Directors Association and the Maryland Medical Directors Association have volunteered to support Futures participants. However state chapters aren’t the only organizations who are committed to educating young physicians about long term care. One physician practice, Central Ohio Geriatrics LLC, will sponsor a participant as well.

Central Ohio Geriatrics LLC President John M. Weigand, M.D., explained, “One of our geriatricians at Central Ohio Geriatrics, Stuart

Central Ohio Geriatrics provides dedicated, comprehensive, evidence-based geriatric care with a focus on achieving the highest level of independence possible and improving the quality of life for seniors.

Our services to seniors include home care, assisted living, wellness programs, skilled rehabilitation, long-term care and hospice. We also are committed to educating future geriatric nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physicians and geriatricians.

John Weigand, M.D., left, Central Ohio Geriatrics president, with Amit Bhojraj, M.D., AMDA Futures Scholarship recipient who will join COG in September. COG supports the Futures program because it gives participants a better understanding of the responsibilities and opportunities in long-term care.

J. Kanter, D.O., CMD, was a Futures participant, and he found the experience to be ‘transformational.’ Providing one more geriatrics fellow or resident with the opportunity to attend this unique program is worth our investment.” Dr. Weigand hopes that the participant his practice sponsors “leaves with a better understanding of what AMDA stands for and the responsibility and opportunity of providing medical care and medical directorship in the long term care setting.” He added that it “would be icing on the cake” if one of his physicians and Futures grads went on to become a national AMDA leader.
